women's rightsPEPFAR, you jerk! We know Condoms Work!
by Mimi Melles
Thu, 08/14/2008 - 2:57pm The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has finally been reauthorized for another five years, and it’s time to hold the United States accountable for its work. It’s pretty clear that, under PEPFAR, the rights of women and young people are ignored. The many strings attached to its plan undermine the needs of women and young people and their ability to have ownership over their own reproductive and sexual health. One of the most harmful pieces within PEPFAR II is the requirement that the State Department report to Congress any time a country with a generalized epidemic expends less than 50 percent of its funds to prevent sexual transmission of HIV on abstinence, delay of sexual debut, monogamy, fidelity, or partner reduction. Evidence from best practices indicates that a comprehensive prevention strategy that also includes education about condoms and harm reduction are critical to achieving a substantial reduction in new infections. read more » Challenging Gender Inequities in Programs and Policies!

Fri, 08/08/2008 - 4:04pm Ok, I’m back…that wasn’t too long--was it? Now—of course, the feminista in me always comes out, especially at a conference where there are so many opportunities to learn about what experts are doing at the policy and programmatic level to address gender inequities. read more » Breathe in, breathe out: the International AIDS Conference 2008 is here and better than ever before!

Thu, 08/07/2008 - 11:27am As an organizer of the Mexico YouthForce Pre-Conference, I can say that I've had a little more time to adjust to the intensity and excitement of the Mexico City International AIDS Conference longer than have most participants. In a few words, the Pre-Conference is a forum for 250 youth participants (who are attending the Main Conference) to discuss issues on youth and HIV/AIDS and to develop skills on how to write effectively for the media, influence decision makers, and advocate on the Mexico YouthForce key messages of Rights, Respect, Responsibility and Resources.
IAC Puts Patterns of Omission and Neglect in Stark Relief
by Jacqui Patterson
Wed, 08/06/2008 - 9:00am Days 1-3 of this conference, I’ve been overwhelmed by the plethora of issues I could cover on this blog and thus paralyzed. After attending the Ecumenical Pre-Conference, I handwrote a long diatribe about the hypocrisy of the church as it relates to showing the love that is supposed to be at the center of Christianity towards queer folk. (This is a bit of a generalization as certain groups are very much trying, as evidenced by some of the discussions at the conference.) Then I felt driven to write about how the women’s rights movement (again, generalization) has also, to some extent, failed to be inclusive in its agenda. This was inspired after participating in the session “Where are the voices of lesbian women?” in the Women’s Networking Zone. In addition to omissions around lesbian and transgendered women, many of us also continue to observe a striking disregard for issues of race with the rather myopic focus on gender that doesn’t encompass intersectionality. One hopes that the movement will begin to truly live up to the slogan of today’s march, “All women, All rights!” read more » |
